VOX File Format

Technique Detail

VOX files are typically used by computer telephony systems, i.e.: voice mail, answering/customer service systems, etc. It is an extremely lo-fi format with very low storage needs.

VOX file uses Dialogic ADPCM codec, especially for saving human speech audio, saves digitized voice data sampled at a low rate; enables the audio data size to be small while still maintaining clarity. It will only save mono 16-bit audio, and like other ADPCM formats, it compresses to 4-bits/sample (for a 4:1 ratio).

The sample rate of Dialogic ADPCM can be 6kHz or 8kHz. 8kHz is more common. There is no header in VOX file to specify this value, user should specify it or assume it to be 8kHz.
